E. R. Field, Inc. was founded in 1931, as an electrical contracting company, by my father, Eugene R. Field. The company specialized in schools and ultimately wired more than a hundred new schools and additions, as well as commercial, institutional and design build projects.
Having an interest in new technologies, and after installing Pyrotronics fire alarm systems, in a couple of new school projects, I was very impressed by Pyrotronics product quality and the care with which the system commissioning was done.. At the close of the second project, Pyrotronics asked if we would assist them in startup of a large system where the installation had not been done well. With successful completion of that task we continued with Pyrotronics factory training and a few years of contract service work for them throughout their Northeast Region. I sought and received a fire alarm distributorship with Pyrotronics of Cedar Knolls, New Jersey in 1979. Pyrotonics later became Cerberus Pyrotronics, and that company was acquired by Siemens and the Pyrotronics name was dropped. Today the brand name is Siemens.
As fire alarm become the larger part of our business the decision was made to curtail electrical construction in favor of fire alarm. We stopped competing with other electrical contractors as they quickly became our customers. Direct sales to large end users, primarily industrial and utility companies, soon followed. Today commercial and institutional facilities are included in our customer base as we have expanded our product lines to include clean agent fire suppression, security systems, and monitoring.
Our technicians are licensed electricians with factory training on the various lines of equipment we distribute. We stock products in our major lines, so that we generally have materials and equipment to fulfill our promise that “We service what we sell”.
